demystifying citation styles

Introduction

The way you write your papers can affect the way they look, but it also affects how other people read them. In this post, I’ll explore some common citation styles and explain what they are and why you might want to use them.

Harvard system.

The Harvard system is the most common style used by universities and other academic institutions. It’s also the style that most journals and books use, as well as newspaper articles and websites.

The Harvard system has two parts: a name and a number. In some cases, those two pieces can be combined into one unit (for example, “Harvard University”), but this isn’t always possible: sometimes they’re separate entities (for example, “Harvard University”).

APA format.

APA style is the most widely used style in the social sciences. It was developed by the American Psychological Association (APA) and it’s used for most scientific journals, including The Journal of Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience, as well as most other academic publications.

APA style uses a three-part title: author(s), date(s) and page numbers. When quoting from a published source, you must include all parts of your reference so that readers know whom you’re referring to when they find something helpful later on their own research journey!

Chicago style.

Chicago Style is the most popular style for citations. It’s easy to use and follow, and it can be used for all types of papers.

  • Chicago style has no special rules or requirements beyond what you already know about APA formatting.
  • The easiest way to apply Chicago style is through the use of parenthetical citations in your text and references at the end of each paper or chapter in your book (see below).

CSE format.

The CSE format is the most common style for technical writing, and it’s also known as the Harvard style. It’s a hybrid of APA and Chicago styles. Although some universities and colleges still use this format, it’s increasingly being replaced by other citation styles like MLA or Chicago/Turabian.

It’s best to use the standard style guide when you write papers, but there are other options as well.

Standard style is the most widely used style, but it’s not the only option. There are other styles that you can use, depending on your research and writing needs. To find out more about these other styles and how to use them in your work, check out this article for an introduction: [link].
